What can you say about a guy who claims that his only steady job was playing blackjack? If he writes and sings like Darryl Purpose you might be tempted to go into career counseling and suggest an alternative path. Right Side of Zero is an eclectic mix of songs cut from pop, folk and rock and roll cloth. Purposes voice is reminiscent of Brooks Williams with the occasional flash of a young Dylan at the edges. His material wraps incisive lyrical content around ever-shifting styles. Miss Yoo [sic] uses jangly guitars to create a piece whose verses and chorus sound like contemporary rock but whose bridge evokes late 50s pop. I will Run is anthem-like with its swelling choruses. The Island Song is moody. And the title cut reveals Purposes outlaw nature. Many of Purposes songs have catchy refrains; all are well-executed. If the music of this California-based singer-songwriter gets the attention he deserves, his next employment venture should include a full house. |
