Biography
Performing Songwriter
October 1997
There’s something soothing and almost hypnotic about Darryl’s voice. Nowhere is it more effective than on the song “Sleep,” which he says “is the closest thing to love.” Somnambulists may have their theme song.

There is a world of wisdom and perhaps a little weariness in the title track, “Right Side of Zero.” But the hopeful heart of a troubadour shines through songs like “Victory in the Struggle,” “I Will Run” and “Don’t Tear Down.”

“Paint the Sky” is nothing short of poetry: “Purple is courage, green is the lie/Time loses everything, everything dies/But all that dies rises in billows of grey/ And after comes rainbows to color the day.” Purpose sets his pen and voice to matters of the heart with equally satisfying results. “Miss Yoo” (that’s how it’s spelled), “Where You Can Find Me” and “Old Rock & Roll Song” all address lovers past or present.

Darryl’s fine guitar work is evident throughout, especially on the instrumental, “Rootwing” which opens and closes the album. Combine that with his hypnotic voice and heartfelt words and “Right Side of Zero” comes close to a perfect ten.
