Darryl Purpose picks up were he left off with the album “Travelers Code” with impassioned storytelling that only one that actually lived the story could possibly tell. On a “Crooked Line” the former professional Black Jack player and Peace activist turned folk artist continues to tell all of his stories in a unique and descriptive manner while singing and playing his acoustic guitar.

He starts the musical storybook off with ‘California (Rutherford Hayes In The Morning)’, which is a realistic turn back of the clock. He conveys the words of each song with so much heartfelt emotion that you can’t help getting caught up in the story. He sings so lucid and clear that the pictures and colors of the person, place, or time begins forming inside your minds eye, then before you know it you are one with the song, and eventually you realize that you are one of the characters that he is singing about, its weird and creepy. ‘A Crooked Line’ speaks of those characters that come from the shadows of the dark alleys of your soul. When you stop and look at the shadow you may be surprised who it is.

There are few musicians that can do what Darryl Purpose does. Those who really live the story can tell it best. Like they say-‘You don’t know what a man is going through until you walk a mile in his shoes.’ I am not so sure if I would have wanted to walk in Purpose’s shoes, although I am sure it was very interesting. I think I would rather have him tell the stories. I agree with Purpose, “Oughtta Be A Highway” says it all. There should be a highway through the mountains of life to help make the trip easier and our burden lighter, but then again what stories would we have to tell if it was an easy trip without any potholes in the road? —MuzikMan (Associate Writer)
