Biography
Folkwax—January 9, 2002
Great albums are few and far between these days, but Darryl Purpose has come close with this, his latest effort. This is one of those albums where every song is worth listening to and where the sound is fresh and consistent from each song to the next.
Purpose’s new album, A Crooked Line, was one of the best Folk albums released in 2001. Purpose is starting to become an established singer/songwriter and is beginning to raise a lot of eyebrows. He can certainly get better, but with this album Purpose shows off his skills left and right, dazzling the listener. He captures the listener’s attention right off the bat with the first track, “California.”

Purpose tells his stories with a beautiful voice that is accompanied by wonderful guitar chords, providing the perfect chemistry between lyrics and music. “Bryant Street” is one of Purpose’s best examples of his storytelling capabilities. With this being the fourth song on the album, there is really no room for complaints - the man has met his mark.

If Folk music received the same attention as Popular music on the radio, this album would yield at least five driving singles, if not more, that would surely rank high on the Pop charts. Unfortunately, Folk music does not get as much airplay as frequently as other genres of music. Nonetheless, Purpose has developed a complete album in Crooked with nearly every song he plays.

Throw in tunes such as “The River Where She Sleeps” and “I Can Get There From Here,” and you’ll find that not many other albums that can beat this masterpiece. This album is as good as or better than any other Folk album that was released last year. It is definitely worth a listen. —Nick Powills
